What is UL?

Prairie Electric is a UL 508 authorized panel shop; it’s one of the many things that separates us from other electrical contractors. Our authorization and certification demonstrate our commitment and ability to meet the highest standards of safety, quality, and customer care.

The more curious among you may be asking: What is UL, anyway? It’s a global safety standard and certification company that for most of its history was known as Underwriters Laboratories (UL!). It’s been around since 1894 when electrical engineer William Henry Merrill started the company. UL plays a critical and pivotal role in overseeing safety analyses of emerging technologies. It’s one of the companies tasked by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) to perform safety testing.

UL got a big boost at the World’s Columbian Exposition (aka the Chicago World’s Fair) in 1893. Merrill, a graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), was sent to assess fire risks associated with the exposition’s construction. The work inspired Merrill to propose an electrical testing lab for insurance underwriters. The idea took off, and Merrill started the Underwriters Electrical Bureau, which became the UL.
