Electrician Apprenticeships at Prairie Electric in Vancouver
Thinking about a career as an electrician but aren’t sure where to begin? You should consider an electrician apprenticeship. It’s the perfect way to get grounded in the basics of electrical contracting work and the electrical industry as a whole.
And the future looks bright, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, who report that “employment of electricians is projected to grow 10 percent from 2018 to 2028, faster than the average for all occupations. Increases in construction spending and demand for alternative energy sources will drive demand for electricians.”
If you’re 18 years old and have a high school diploma (or GED), you can get started on your electrical training right now. Take a look at job opportunities on this page. Chances are people applying for these jobs have done an apprenticeship at one time or another with a local outfit.

Electrical Apprentice
To become an electrician, you’ll start as an apprentice. It takes hard work and dedication because you’ll be working and studying. It’s the best kind of on-the-job training, though, especially since apprenticeships are paid!
As we discuss in a piece we wrote on becoming an electrician, training as an apprentice lasts four to five years, “and it includes troubleshooting and diagnosing problems, both of which improve with experience.”
As you begin to familiarize yourself with electrical systems and the electrical trade, you’ll find yourself on the fast track to being a licensed electrician. Many nationally recognized companies are looking for electrical workers — including Prairie! We work throughout Vancouver, Washington, and Portland, Oregon.
JATC (Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committees)
Prairie partners with Portland’s local JATC (Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committees) to administer the apprenticeship program. Here’s what you’ll get as part of your training:
- 8,000 hours on-the-job training
- 576 hours of classroom training
- Semi-annual wage increase
- Certificate of Completion
- Referral to the State General Journeyman Electrician exam upon completion
As for pay while an apprentice electrician, you can expect to earn more than $21 an hour by year four. After that, depending on the type of electrical work you do, you may begin to earn a wage in the mid-$30-an-hour range plus benefits.
Keep an eye out for job alerts and job postings for openings for careers in the electrical field once you have completed your electrical apprenticeship. As we mentioned, many national electrical contractors can provide a sort of top-notch training center for you.
